I put the outfits shown here together based on the Boyfriend Blazer craze that’s sweeping the nation. It’s everywhere, but I have yet to go there myself. I shopped with one of my personal styling clients yesterday and found her an Ella Moss Knit “Boyfriend” Blazer at Nordstrom and I gotta say — it went with everything and looked fantastic on her. And super versatile! Like totally. (Sadly, I still use the word “totally” even though I’m well aware how much it dumbs me down.) Whatever!
But what DO we think of this blazer/pencil skirt combination that is so clearly a blast from the past? I rocked this look from 1984-1987 and now I’m wondering, why was I so dressed up!?? I was only 17-20 years-old and spent most of my time at college parties and sorority meetings — oh and class, of course. I guess I was trying to look more grown-up so people would take me seriously. Not sure if that was working for me, but today I’m decidedly more casual — still very put together, but I’m a no fuss dresser cuz I am L-A-Z-Y.
Some great things came out the 1980s. My daughter for one (with only two months to spare), but how awesome was the movie Valley Girl and anything directed by John Hughes, particularly Pretty in Pink.
I was so totally channeling Molly Ringwald back then.
Kind of? No?
What else was totally 80s? MTV, Madonna, Michael Jackson, skinny ties, stirrup leggings, high-top white and black Reeboks, “Wayfarer” Ray Bans, and Guess acid-washed jeans to name a few.
But seriously, back to this boyfriend blazer. Does this combination translate in 2010? I might be a late (or never) adapter on this revival of a long-forgotten trend from 1984. We’ll see. Like for sure.
